No-Sew Fringed Fleece Blanket Pattern

This is the preferred pattern for blankets donated to the Salt Lake County Utah Project Linus chapter.  Because of the precise cutting needed to make this blanket, the steps requiring cutting may not be suitable for those who are unable to make precise, straight cuts.  Please consider this when starting your project.

If you are considering making blankets for a service project, please contact us for information and consider attending one of our "Blanket Days".  This is a great way to get hands-on "training" in making these blankets.  Our experienced Blanketeers are happy to share all of the tips and tricks they've picked up over the years.  We highly encourage this because we occasionally receive fringed blankets that don't meet our quality standards, e.g., blankets with uneven cuts, jagged edges, oversized holes, or untrimmed selvages.  Please keep in mind, these blankets are "gifts" to children and we want the children to be presented a perfectly made blanket to comfort them during their time of need.

This is a list and a picture of the most common mistakes and examples of what NOT to do:

  •  Don't cut the holes too big.
  •  Don't knot the fringe cuts.
  •  Don't make jagged/uneven cuts for the fringe.
  •  Don't loop fringe in different directions.
  •  And most importantly - DON'T leave the selvage edge on the fabric.

When you are ready to donate your blanket(s) or if you have any questions or need additional information, please contact our chapter at slcprojectlinus@gmail.com.

Supplies Needed:

  • Blizzard or anti-pill fleece - 2 yards for a large blanket; 1 1/2 yards for a medium blanket.  Please do not use fleece from prepackaged, double sided blanket making "kits"
  • Cutting mat or space to cut fabric
  • Cutting ruler
  • Rotary cutter (optional)
  • Sharp scissors
  • 3" square template (can be made from construction paper)
  • 1 1/4" template (can be made from construction paper) or you can use a strip of poster board with marks 1 1/4" apart
  • One of the following to push fringe through holes - small dowel, chop stick, skewer, crochet hook, knitting needle, etc.
  • Before you start, make sure you read and understand the "DON'TS" listed above.

Step 1 - Place fleece on your work table right side up and using a cutting ruler and rotary cutter (or scissors) cut off selvage edges on both sides Cut all sides of your fabric to make sure you have straight edges on all 4 sides.

Step 2 - Using your 3" template, cut a 3" square from each corner.  Place a piece of masking tape from cut corner to cut corner.

Step 3 - Using your 1 1/4" template, make straight clean cuts to the edge of the tape.  Repeat on remaining 3 sides.

Tip:  You may need to work from one edge to the middle, then work from the opposite side in case you need to adjust on the fringe size to make them even.

Step 4 - Fold the fringe up and back over your tape up to end of your cut lines.  Use the very tips of scissors to make VERY TINY holes at the top/center of each fringe - NOT LARGER THAN 1/8".  Remove the tape.

Step 5 - Loop the fringe down through the tiny hole by pushing it through with a small dowel, chop stick, skewer, crochet hook, knitting needle, etc.  Pull all the fringes through the holes in the same direction around the entire blanket.

Note: you want the holes to be very small, so it may be difficult to pull the fringe through - that is a good thing!

That’s it!  This is what your finished edge should look like on right side of blanket.
