2026 May/June News
Here it is, May already! It feels like the year just got started and somehow we are nearly halfway through. Time really does fly when you are surrounded by fabric, yarn, and generous hearts.
We have been as busy as ever providing blankets to children in need. Warmer weather may be on the way, but the need for blanket hugs never takes a season off. So far this year, we have donated over 800 blankets, all to local children in need. Thank you to our regular blanketeers and to those who quietly make donations throughout the year. Your support keeps the blankets coming and the hugs going. We truly could not do this without you!
In this latest edition of our news, you will find a little bit of everything. Look for crocheted edging tips; a fun follow up to Worldwide Quilt Day from March; and some heartfelt thank you notes we have received. Plenty of good reading, no scissors, hooks or measuring tape required!
Crochet Stitching Tips for Smooth/Flat Edges
We are so excited to have lots of new crocheters participating with our chapter. They crochet edges around fleece to make amazing blankets for our local children. We all have our own styles, with different stitches and different tensions. That is part of what makes this group so great! It's so fun for us to see all of the creative edges.
When working on your edges, aim for a finish that helps your blanket lie nice and flat. A foundation row and at least one additional row makes for a nice edging. If you tend to crochet tightly, try adding a few extra stitches, especially around the corners, to keep everything smooth and prevent curling. If you are a loose crocheter, consider skipping a few stitches to keep your work from rippling.
Millie has been experimenting with crocheting around square corners instead of rounded corners. This is a great option when we have smaller pieces of fleece to work with and want to keep the blanket as large as possible.
We will share an update with pictures in the future and update our pattern tab.
Happy Crocheting!
Worldwide Quilt Day - March 21, 2026
Virginia Lee, along with a dedicated crew of volunteers, brought the annual Worldwide Quilt Day to life at the Sandy Senior Center this March. The ever popular "give and take" table drew quite a crowd. While there was plenty of enthusiastic participants reaching for treasures, everyone made it out unscathed and smiling.
A fantastic silent auction kept the excitement going, with proceeds supporting the centers programs. Quilters and quilt groups filled the space with beautiful creations, swapping tips, tricks, and plenty of friendly conversation along the way. There was no shortage of networking either. Connections were stitched together just as skillfully as the quilts on display.
Several of our very own blanketeers were hard at work at their sewing stations, proudly representing our chapter. All in all, it was a lively and enjoyable day for everyone involved. A big thank you to Virginia and all the volunteers who made this event a memorable success!
Notes of Gratitude
These are just a few of the thank you notes we have received over the past few months. We are deeply grateful to everyone who participates in our blanket days and to those who donate blankets throughout the year. Each blanket represents time, care, and compassion. They make a meaningful difference for the local children who received them. Your kindness and dedication are truly appreciated.
