June Newsletter 2024

 Welcome Summer!

As we welcome the warm summer days of June, let us not forget the children in need who cherish a blanket hug!  It's been another busy month for our chapter as we've received and produced many incredible blankets that were distributed to the various organizations we support.  We thank the groups who have donated blankets and heartfelt thanks to our committed blanketeers who month after month produce lovely blankets for distribution to local children.

In this month's newsletter, we have an inspiring article from Jackie Cohen about a local junior high school sewing class, a highlight of a camp to whom we donated and a variety of pictures of blanket creations!

Reminder about upcoming blanket making days -

The Mountain Vista Methodist Church group will meet Wednesday, June 19th, 1:00 - 3:00 for blanket making and potluck.

The Our Saviour Lutheran Church group will meet Monday, July 8th, 10:00 - 1:00.

Middle School Invitation (by Jackie Cohen)

Last year just before school closed for the summer, we were invited to a middle school home economics class to share the good news about Project Linus.  The middle school teacher had heard of Project Linus but did not know much about it.  She had already completed the objective of the years' planned projects. There was about a month left of classes.  She had the students choose a community service (i.e., Project Linus, Quilts of Valor, etc.) to create and sew a blanket for donation.

There were scraps of fabric of all kinds that were in the storage area of the classroom.  The students planned, chose the fabric, measured, cut and sewed each piece together.  Unfortunately for them, the school year was running out before they could finish their work.

I was invited to speak to the class and gave a 5 minute presentation on the focus and history of Project Linus.  I also brought in a sampling of the blankets we had made to show them the finished products.  The students were very interested in the concept of helping children who needed a "hug".  I believe that if school had continued, we would have had a few recruits for out monthly work groups.  I also believe that we have planted the seed to grow future Project Linus recruits.

I took the blankets they had started.  Here is a photo of a quilt designed by 3 of the students that was finally finished by Chris and me.  A few seams needed to be reinforced and small alterations were  made in the design, but it is primarily as they had created it.

A Special Thank You From "Camp Hobe"

Recently our chapter donated 50 blankets for the children attending day camp at Camp Hobe.  Camp Hobe offers psychosocial support programs for children being treated for cancer and similarly-treated disorders and their families, serving Utah and the surrounding intermountain area.  Through summer camp programs and family outings, the camp provides a place for everyone to be "kids", heal and have fun.  Below is a special thank you to all the blanketeers from the camp director.  I hope to get pictures from the camp and if so, will share them in a future post!

A Collection of Pictures

In closing, below is a collage of some of the awesome blankets turned in this month.  Thanks to all of you for the blanket donations, fabric and yarn donations and monetary donations that help keep us going.  💕
