August Newsletter 2024

August Newsletter 2024

Here we are already in the dog days of summer...it's hot hot hot!

This month we have received approximately 200 blankets and have donated approximately 200 blankets to local children in need.  We delivered blankets to the Salt Lake City Police Department to be distributed to children at their "Pay It Forward" event on August 17th.  We will be making another donation to them for their upcoming December event.

Thank you to all of our dedicated Blanketeers and to Sweet Charity Sisters for your generous donations this month.  We couldn't do what we do without all of your support.

A quick reminder to our dedicated quilters out there, please check and double check your quilts for stray pins.  Recently, HQ Project Linus received a complaint from a distraught mother whose child was stuck with a pin.  We check the blankets when labeling and packaging them, but ask that you check them prior to donation as well.

In this month's newsletter, read about a special journey our blankets took in June, get an update on our fundraising, read a special thank you, and view pictures of blankets donated to our cause.

Warm regards,
Karen & Millie

OUR SAVIOUR'S LUTHERAN CHURCH

YOUTH VISIT TO EL PASO, TEXAS

Our Saviour's Lutheran Church (OSLC) is an avid supporter of the Salt Lake County Chapter of Project Linus.  Without their support, we would not be as successful as we are and we sincerely appreciate the support we receive.

In June, Pastor Reba of OSLC accompanied a group of youth from the church to Iglesia Luterana Cristo Rey Lutheran Church ("Christ the King Lutheran Church") located in the heart of a low-income Hispanic district in central El Paso, Texas.  Pastor Rose Mary Sanchez-Guzman is the Senior Pastor.  Cristo Rey ministers to people on both sides of the international border.

You may be wondering, what does this have to do with Project Linus? Our local chapter provided blankets to the group who mailed blankets to El Paso and also carried some with them as they traveled to El Paso!  Many of the blankets were distributed to children in need and some were left to be given to children as needed, many of whom are orphaned at the border.

The youth participated in the "Border Immersion Program".  They met with children and families who have experienced and endured major tragedy hardships and difficulties that no person or child should endure.  They toured the border fence, met with border patrol and immigration lawyers, worked with youth at the after school program and experienced Mexican and Mexican-American culture.  It was truly a life changing experience for these youth.

Salt Lake County Chapter of Project Linus is honored to provide blankets to such a worthwhile cause and reciprocate the support we've received from OSLC.  As these children wrap themselves with the blankets we've sent, we hope they feel the love, support and hope we send to them.

UPDATE ON SMITH'S INSPIRING DONATIONS

We rely solely on the generous monetary and material donations to keep our chapter going strong.  Several newsletters ago, we posted about the donation opportunity for our chapter through the Smith's Inspiring Donations Program.  If you are a Smith's shopper with a rewards card, all you need to do is link our non-profit to your card.  Smith's will donate .05% of your qualifying purchases to our chapter.  We didn't quite meet our goal of $100 per quarter for the quarter ending June 2024 but I know we can do better next quarter.

If you haven't already, please sign up and encourage your friends and family to sign up as well and shop at Smith's!  Click on the link below to sign up and use organization code VJ255
